Wormeries FAQ

What is a wormery?

It’s an easy, efficient system of converting ordinary kitchen food waste into liquid feed and rich organic compost through the natural action of worms.

How does it work?

The Wormery is divided into a number of chambers, in one of these live the worms (it’s OK you don’t have to touch them – you probably won’t even see much of them). All you do is drop your daily kitchen waste into the bin and forget it.The worms feed on the food waste and convert it into concentrated liquid feed and organic compost.

What can I put in?

Ordinary kitchen waste such as peelings, cooked and uncooked scraps, teabags, egg shells, paper kitchen towels, even shredded newspaper etc. In fact, virtually any organic kitchen waste.

What do I get out?

A strong, nutrient rich liquid feed which you dilute with water prior to use as an excellent plant food

for house plants, garden flowers, shrubs, vegetables or as a lawn feed, and a rich organic compost.

Why worms

Nature has provided us with the perfect waste disposal unit in the worm. They live their whole lives in the dark, moist atmosphere of the wormery, eating the waste material that you put in and converting it into liquid feed and compost. The wormery is an ideal environment for them to work in.

How long does it take?

The wormery is quick and efficient. Within about 8 weeks you’ll be tapping off liquid feed. A handful of waste takes 6-8 weeks to turn into compost. However most people wait until the wormery or tray is nearly full before emptying the compost. As you are adding food all the time it typically takes 9 – 12 months to have a bin mostly full of rich organic compost or 3 to 4 months per tray. The Original Wormery and 3-tray Worm Works will deal with the typical food waste of a family of four – about 75% of what goes in comes out as liquid feed.

Where should I keep the wormery?

The worm works should be kept in a dry, cool, covered area and should never be left exposed to the rain or direct sun. Ideally it should be kept at a temperature between 5 and 26 degrees celsius. It should never be allowed to freeze. It can be kept outside when warm enough or in the garden shed, garage or utility room.

Does it smell?

No, as long as you operate the bin as instructed. As the waste material you put in starts to decompose it is consumed by the worms which eliminates the possibility of odour.
